It turns out that the psychological thriller's script only mentions a "trigger song" as Stiles' character Jack and his wife Alice (Florence Pugh) navigate a dark 1950s suburb.
"In preparation, Harry called me and said, 'What's the trigger song? What's the tune?' I said, 'I don't know. I go to different writers to write it. Do you have something in mind?'" the Wild director revealed to Variety. "And he said, 'I'll think about it.' Five minutes later, he sent me a demo from his piano and that ended up being in the movie."
Wilde added: "He called me and said, 'What is this?' And I was like, 'Yeah, that's it, that's it. And that's crazy that you did it in five minutes.'
Style prepares to write "something that can be both sweet and melodramatic depending entirely on the context" like a movie.
“I remember playing it on the piano for the first time, and it had a kind of homemade lullaby feel to it,” shares Styles. "Applied at different times in film, I think it takes on some different lives, I hope."
And when the Grammy winner isn't singing in movies, she's tap dancing. "I think I've been waiting my whole life for someone to do a 35-second tapping routine," Styles said.
The "Watermelon Sugar" singer originally replaced Shia LaBeouf in the film. The "Dunkirk" actor's performance on set even brought director Wilde to tears of joy due to his emotional intensity as Jack.
"Harry took it to another level," Wilde told Rolling Stone. "He was totally in the moment, he started shouting lines to the crowd, this initial roar was more intense than we expected from the scene."
Wild continued: “We were all shocked by the monitor. I think Harry was surprised too. That's the best time for an actor, when you're completely out of your body."
